Chapter 19

Tory could not move. No part of her body responded to her mind’s commands. I must run. Run! Yes, Maman. I must get away from Bastiann, get away from this man, Drake!

Then she remembered it was too late to run, that Drake had come and gone. He had violated her in ways she had not imagined possible. No one had explained these things to her . . . but now she knew for herself what her mère and Sassy had feared Bastiann would do.

She lay still and drifted away in her mind. She was a girl again, a child running through the tall grass of the orchard at Sugar Tree, climbing high into the boughs of an apple tree.

Soon Maman will call me back to my lessons, Tory imagined. I must wash my face at the pump so Maman does not know I have been running in the orchard.

After I finish my lessons, Sassy will make little strawberry tarts and Maman and I will take our tea in the parlor. We will smile and sip our tea, and I will savor the one bite of tart Maman allows me.

She could hear Adeline’s sweet voice, and even feel her smooth, ebony skin beneath her fingertips. A Southern woman curtails her appetite, her mère murmured. She must not allow her figure to suffer from overindulgence.

Oui, Maman.

After a while, Tory slept.
